Jandek, Final(ly)

The Door Behind (776)

The most frightening cover of the whole catalogue- Jandek has become a giant hairball, slouched with a full beard and a ‘fro. The quality of the photo itself is pretty awful- scanned in, probably, from some larger picture.

Another loveletter album, being sung, mostly, to some woman. I wouldn’t be surprised, though, if this one was actually sung to a bunch of different women. Track two, ‘Gate Strikes One,’ sounds as if it’s happening at a high school dance: ‘She picked me from the crowd/she told her girlfriends about it/they told me she liked me/and asked me if I liked her.’ ‘The Slow Burn’ talks about how the phantom protagonist came to his house and he had to kill her. Come to think of it, this record could be a sweet, touching tribute to a special new woman in Jandek’s life, or it could be a cryptic note sent to a newspaper to brag about the latest rash of trophy killings by an increasingly prolific and cryptic zealot.

Sample lyric: “The desert is calling me, but I’m not that good.’

A Kingdom He Likes (777)

As is usually the case, I saw the artwork for this record well before it arrived at my house. The cover depicts a smiling Jandek wearing his cowboy hat (the same one he wore when he played Glasgow? I think so, yeah) and sporting a well-trimmed beard. ‘A Kingdom He Likes’ for the title, Corwood #777- what would be better than finding out that the whole discography was Biblical in nature, and that he had finally found the kingdom and achieved salvation?

As it turns out, Hearing Jandek shout ‘Skank! You skank!’ on ‘Real Afternoons’ is way better than eternal salvation. Way funnier, at the very least.

Sample lyric: “There’s only one altar. That’s the refrigerator.’

When I Took That Train (778)

More sedate than the last few, with all of the God imagery I imagined being on the last one. Multiple references to staying, to not leaving or going anywhere. Me, I’m out of here- twenty-seven Jandek reviews in six days (I know, I said five) has left me exhausted with a backlog of exactly zero reviews. I usually have a week’s worth wrapped up.

Sample lyric: “I’m a rock and I’m not going to change for nobody, no thing because it’s all about God! It’s all about God and that’s where I am.”

Hey Mike. Very nice blog :0) I just got inside from washing and waxing my truck. It is my baby. Took me 2 hours though. So I settled down into my basement and started doing some web surfing. Anyways I am in the process of grabbing my masters degree and have spent the last 6 months researching beginner guitar. In the midst of my surfing I landed smack dab in the middle of your blog. I hope you do not think I am intruding but I must say it is great blog. Even though Jandek, Final(ly) is way off base from beginner guitar I found myself cruising through your blog archives for the last half hour :0) You have some nice blogging friends. Anyways, I need to get back to my mission. I wrote don’t your url and feel free to visit me here at beginner guitar. I am so busy so I can only update my site monthly. Keep up the great work.
