B, VII

Black Heart Procession- ‘Three’

The jagged, addled waltz of Three Mile Pilot, edges sanded down, covered with the gauze of country sensibility. Less mathy, more focused, and prettier than the Pilot- the kind of stuff that can easily play in the background, complexities wafting by unnoticed until the active engagement.

Black Helicopter- ‘That Specific Function’

Saw these guys open for Shellac in a smoky converted movie theater in Portland, Maine a few years back. I remember them being pretty static visually (aside from the relative physical oddity of the band members themselves- really tall, lanky redheaded singer/guitarist playing next to a guy who bore a suspicious resemblance to a fire hydrant) but fascinating in a narrative sense- these matter-of-factly grim stories of depravity and woe (of course these guys are playing with Steve Albini, I thought.) Their music isn’t terribly dynamic- it just kinda chugs along as these stories unfold. Still, though, the stories- this guy who takes the entire summer to refurbish a boat that he bought, finishes, and is so happy with all the work that he did that he names the boat ‘Good Times’ because he thinks of all the fun he’s going to have fishing and cruising around. He puts the boat out on the lake, but no one will tell him where the fish are because his boat is named after ‘A negro program.’ (!) I saw the band play once, one time, but remembered how the story went for years. Their web page reports that they’re working on a followup, which I’m totally going to buy, despite a few lackluster live performances that I have caught since that Portland show.

Black Star

A filing nightmare: ‘Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star.’ Def, Mos? Kweli, Talib? Under M for ‘Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star’? Or under B, like I have had it, sandwiched between the sludge and the emo? Goddamn, man, my head hurts.
